Carlsbad Man Arrested In Hit-And-Run Fatality

According to this SignOnSanDiego .com articl e, 36 year old Joseph Ricardo Fernandez was arrested in relation to the hit-and-run death of James Steven Swarzman.

According to police, Fernandez got in touch with the Carlsbad police on Monday and said that he might have been involved in a collision. When Fernandez's truck was examined, officers found the damage to be consistent with Swarzman's hit-and-run.

Drinking may have been a factor.

Fernandez is currently being held in Vista on $50,000 bail, with an arraignment scheduled for Wednesday in Vista Superior Court.

Detectives now say that the truck they are looking for is a dark-colored Dodge Ram pickup. According to this follow-up article at nctimes.com, the truck would meet the following description:

2007 or 2008 Dodge Ram 1500, or
2007 Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500, with
damage to the front on the passenger's side

Bicyclist Killed In Hit-And-Run: Information Needed!

James Steven Swarzman, a 47 year old competitive and recreational bicycle rider, was killed in a hit-and-run early last Sunday morning. He was on a training ride with two other bicyclists and, at near North Coast Highway 101 and Jason Street, was hit was hit from behind by a dark-colored pickup truck at about 1:00 am. Although he was air lifted to La Jolla Scripps Memorial Hospital, he was, according to the 10news.com article, pronounced dead three hours later.

It would be tempting to call this tragic event an accident, but authorities are investigating the possibility that Swarzman was hit on purpose. According to a witness, the driver never slowed down.

This is the second hit-and-run collision in this area recently, the first involved Heath Bernstein, who was riding his bicycle on Highway 101 in Carlsbad when he was run down by a dark-colored pickup truck. According to Bernstein, he believes that the driver of the truck, who "came across one empty lane of traffic and the bike lane" hit him on purpose.

Authorities are looking for a "newer model Ford F-150 pickup, either blue or dark-colored, with obvious front end damage, probably to the headlights" in connection with this accident. According to the 10News article, the truck involved in Sunday's tragedy is almost identical to the one in Bernstein's hit-and-run collision.

Former Olympian Becomes Latest Bicycling Fatality for Orange County

According to this CrimeVoice.com article, former track and field Olympian (and Moroccan native) Amine Britel was riding eastbound on San Joaquin Hills Road between Newport Ridge Drive-West and Spyglass Hill Road when he was hit by a Volkswagen Jetta.

Although paramedics were called to the scene, they were ultimately unable to revive Britel, who either died at the scene or en route to a medical facility (the details of the case haven't been published).

Britel was, by all accounts both a consummate athlete and a talented businessman. He was not only a former track and field Olympian, but also a world-class triathlete and professional soccer player. He had degrees from both Harvard and UC Berkley, and was the owner of a small business in Newport Beach.

The driver of the white Jetta, 22 year old Danae Marie Miller, faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Her numerous other traffic tickets include (since 2005): speeding, failure to stop at a stop sign, and talking on her cell phone while driving. She is currently out on a bail of $100,000.

Unfortunately, Britel's untimely death isn't the first to happen in this area of Orange County; since 2009 there have been four other vehicle-related bicyclist fatalities.

Updated On Bicyclist Fatality: Tragedy All Around

In an article published by The San Diego Union Tribune, more details on the untimely and devastating death of Suntat Peverley are brought to light.

The driver of the street sweeper involved, 77-year-old Fred Franklin Fuller, was suffering from a tragedy of his the own. Fuller, who had owned his own street sweeping company for 33 years, had given the business up to his son. But both his son and his wife died less than a month ago, causing Fuller to resume his job behind the wheel.

According to police involved Franklin confessed that he'd been having a hard time sleeping, and given the death of his wife and son, it is no wonder. Although he has been found at fault for the accident he has not been charged and his license is under investigation.

Fuller's sad personal circumstances do not lessen the grief that Peverley's wife and two children face at his passing, though. Peverley, a long-time Phlebotomist, was well known and well liked by co-workers and friends. He biked to stay in shape, and loved his life as a father, husband, and breadwinner for his family.

Given the suddenness of his passing, friends are starting a (non-tax-deductible) memorial fund to help his family defray sudden and unavoidable costs.

Bicyclists' Greatest Fear: Being Hit From Behind

On February 11, 2011 many bicyclists' worst fear was realized when 44-year-old bicyclist Suntat Peverley was killed after being hit from behind on his bike.

Peverley, according to this 10News.com article, was riding south in the bike lane on Genesee Ave. (near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard Drive) when he was hit from behind by the street sweeper of which a dozing 77-year-old man had lost control.

According to San Diego Police Officer David Stafford, Peverley was thrown from his bike into the pavement and suffered major head trauma. The blunt force trauma evidently included several skull fractures and massive brain damage. Although Peverley was on life support in Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla's ICU briefly, he was pronounced dead at 10:45pm on Friday, February 11th, a little more than 5 hours after the time of the accident.

Peverley's death is an example of a scenario that gives even extreme road warriors pause: getting hit from behind while doing everything right. Not only was Peverley in the bike lane (and out of traffic) at the time of the accident, he was also wearing a helmet to protect himself.

His death is a tragedy.

Felt says that although current forks meet CPSC standards and no forks have failed, its in-house testing has detected substandard performance. "Our protocol is to test carbon frames and forks at random from our OEM carbon factory assembly lines," explains Felt company president Bill Duehring. "After testing a cross-section of early production forks we are simply not satisfied."

Halloween Poker Run - 2010

The full moon brought out several costume clad runners last Sunday for the 2nd annual Halloween Poker Run in Carlsbad.

We had a total of 15 runners, a handful of which were dressed up in costumes as pictured (R to L) Carmen Miranda, Zoot Man, Joan of Arc, 60's Hippie and Mike Meyer of the Movie "Halloween".

It was great watching the expressions on the passing motorists and pedestrians as we passed them in costume. Many smiled big while others gave us a hearty thumbs up!

As for the winning poker hand, a full house took the prize - a free breakfast.

We really enjoyed the diverse group and thank the Temecula Red Liners for showing up. In all, we had several runners who were training for the Boston and New York City Marathons.

Giving Thanks for Those Special Moments

The fall chill is in the air and the approaching holidays mark the end of another great year! It is time for reflection and giving thanks.

When it comes to being grateful, so many people come to mind. This year was magical, and I feel extremely fortunate to have met so many new warm people. It’s hard to mention each one of you, but you know who you are. You are the race directors, crew, support staff, bike mechanics, editors, and of course - the “highly paid” club volunteers of various types that made the race season a success. You are the unspoken heroes who wake up early ... I mean really early, like 2-3 a.m.… to set up the races. I met you at bicycle races, running and swimming events, and triathlons. You made them great!

When it comes to being thankful, don’t forget the often overlooked spouses and partners too. Without their support and their willingness to cheer us on, where would we be? They are also the true unsung heroes.

So, here’s a photo that I took of a classy lady named Pat Baker, under an umbrella (held lovingly by her husband). To me, it epitomizes teamwork, love, and dedication to a better life. (It was taken in the rain one early morning at the Fiesta Island Time Trial, which was one of the many events I sponsored in 2010). It is love in its simplest form, holding the umbrella so that Pat could warm up.

I want to thank all of you for your support, encouragement and caring at this last years events and adventures! Also, thank you all so much for your case referrals which enable me to continue to support your club and the sport. I will see you all out there in 2011.

If you see me, make sure to say hello. As we all know, the race season is a busy time for everyone. I look forward to the opportunities we’ll have to chat, and take in a special moment.

Bicyclist Helps Wounded Marines

Competitive bicyclist Jim Penseyres, has been sharing both his considerable expertise and also his considerable love of bicycling with injured soldiers as of late.

A former marine himself, Penseyres has been organizing rides with Marines at Camp Pendleton to help today's veterans deal with the "anguish and frustration" of war and its consequences. Although he admits he was perceived as "a grandpa" among the younger soldiers at first, he eventually won friendships and has been working and riding with a group of regulars since then.

Poway Woman Killed While Riding Her Bike

In yet another tragic event, a 50-year-old Poway woman was killed on Saturday September 19th while riding her bike with her boyfriend.

According to NBC San Diego, the woman and her boyfriend were riding along Rancho Santa Fe Road near Calle Barcelona in Carlsbad.

Fiesta Island TEAM Time Trial - September 11, 2010

Team Time Trials were held on September 11, 2010 as a part of the annual Fiesta Island Time Trial series. If you love cycling and racing, this is a great event to attend.

The series is comprised of 6 individual time trials and a team time trial and is dubbed "San Diego's Race of Truth". The final individual time trial for this season will be held on October 10th. For more information see here

Two Bicyclists stuck on Hwy. 101 while participating in Charity Ride

Two women were hit by a tractor-trailer truck while participating in the 16th annual Cool Breeze Century bicycle charity ride on August 21st.

They were traveling North on a stretch of Highway 101 between Ventura and Santa Barbara when the right rear section of the trailer struck one of the women. That caused her to veer right and crash into the other rider according to the Ventura County Star. Both women were seriously injured. See the complete story here

The women are seasoned cyclists who had participated in the Cool Breeze ride before.

The state Department of Transportation is planning improvments to Highway 101 including a dedicated two-way bike path on the side closest to the ocean instead of a bike lane on the highway.

The bike path would be 10 fee wide with railings on both sides. Construction is scheduled to start next year and be completed by 2010.

For Now, Armstrong "Bulletproof" For Battle With "Court Of Public Opinion"

Although Armstrong himself, bicycling fans, and federal investigators are all taking Landis' claims about Lance Armstrong's doping seriously, indications are that Armstrong is essentially unassailably popular in the eyes of the public.

His triumph over cancer, his amazing athletic achievements, and the amount of money he's given to cancer research are all factors in his durable popularity. Sales of his merchandise are consistient and guesses put Armstrong's personal income at about $20 million this last year.

All that could change, though, according to a USA Today article, if the doping allegations were found to have merit. Experts predict his fall would be "epic", "legendary", and potentially worse than that of Tiger Woods. Armstrong continues to 100% deny any direct or indirect involvement with doping, and it is clear that the public would prefer that to be the case.

Mayor Villaraigosa For Helmet Law, Bicyclists For 3 Foot Passing Law

Mayor Villaraigosa continues his crusade for a statewide helmet mandate although bicyclists involved in legislation encourage, instead, a 3-foot-passing law for drivers instead. Although helmets have long been shown to increase safety on a ride, Bicycle Advisory Committee member Joe Linton said that a mandate would inadvertently result in less bicycle riding, and a corresponding decline in public health, physical activity, and "safety in numbers." Although the Mayor doesn't seem to be budging--a fact which frustrates bicyclists--many bicyclists are happy enough about all the attention on bicycling to forgive. After all, the Mayor was just in a traumatic bicycling accident.

Just for the record, bicyclists, I am pro-helmet and wear one when I ride. Whether or not the legislation being debated is in everybody's best interest, I say "RIDE SAFE!" regardless.

LA Mayor Becomes Bicycle Advocate After Shattering Elbow In Crash

When Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa took to the streets of LA on his bicycle in July, he expected to enjoy the weather and the neighborhood, not come back with a shattered elbow. But a shattered elbow is exactly what he got after a taxi pulled out in front of him suddenly (and without signaling), causing him to swerve and fall.

Villaraigosa, who has been fairly quiet about the notorious bicyclist-motorist problems in LA, has been transformed into an activist for the bicycling community by his experience. In a New York Times article Villaraigosa is quoted as saying the following about his accident: “I’ll tell you what I came away with: that in the area of bicycling, I’ve got to do a better job and the city’s got to do a better job."

MSNBC has picked up on it too--apparently the degree of frustration inherent in riding bicycles in Los Angeles is top news these days! Hallelujah!

Although my condolences go out to Villaraigosa and his likely painful elbow, I hope his injury is a policy-changer around here; we bicyclists need all the help we can get in order to make the roads safe.

Contador Wins Tour de France 2010 (Plus Stage 20 Updates)

By now it is all over the airwaves, computer screens, and Internet...Contador has won his 3rd Tour de France. Even though Schleck and Contador looked friendly and relaxed during the final stage--joking with each other and smiling for the camera, theirs is a rivalry that is bound to make the next few TDF races exciting for spectators.

In what must have seemed insult on top of injury, Armstrong's team was made to remove their LIVESTRONG jerseys before the finish line, though. Team RadioShack had donned the "LIVESTRONG 28" jerseys in a attempt to call attention to the 28 million people who die of cancer each year. Tour de France Stage 19: Bordeaux to Pauillac

This stage lifted--and then dashed--the hopes of legions of Schleck fans out there. Despite early appearances, Schleck's legs were simply no match for Contador's during this time trial. Contador will ride into Paris with the yellow jersey and 30+ seconds ahead of Schleck.

Tour de France Stage 18: Salies-de-Bearn to Bordeaux

Tour de France Stage 17: Pau to Col du Tourmalet

Schleck and Contador were both center stage today as the two bicyclists went mano a mano up one of the hardest climbs this TDF has to offer. While Contador retained the yellow jersey, many say the fight is not yet won--Schleck is only 8 seconds behind and is still very much interested in winning the tour.

In what some will consider a nice change of pace, Contador apologized to Schleck for his previous conduct, and acted in a much more traditional way during this stage's ride.

Keep your eyes peeled for the next stage's results--they're bound to be exciting!

Tour de France Stage 16: Bagnères-de-Luchon

If any day was going to be Lance Armstrong's day, this was it. Armstrong, who had spoke about one last stage win in his career, was one of the stage's leaders up until the very end. Alas, he was bested by France's Fedrigo, but he gave this grueling stage as much as he could until the end.

There were no changes in the overall standing.

LeMond Subpoenaed In Government Probe Into Armstrong's Alleged Doping

The New York Daily News reports that Greg LeMond, has been subpoenaed by the government for the FDA case against Armsgrong. FDA criminal investigator Jeff Novitzky, who is famous for uncovering the BALCO doping ring, is investigating allegations of doping in Armsgrong and the 4 teams with which the bicyclist has been associated since 1998 (Astana, National Geographic, RadioShack, and U.S. Postal Service)

This news couldn't come at a worse time for Armstrong--he's had terrible luck in the TDF this year, and trades on the currency of his good name for his cancer-fighting charity LIVESTRONG. Armstrong's lawyer isn't enjoying the free publicity though, and has sent a letter to the prosecutor complaining about the disastrous leaks to the public.

Whether the allegations are unfounded or legitimate remains to be seen--but it is becoming increasingly clear that the FDA is taking them seriously. Stay tuned for updates in the case.

Tour de France Stage 15: Pamiers to Bagneres-de-Luchon

Another dramatic day for the 2010 Tour de France...Contador (the yellow jersey from stage 14 and now the overall race winner) and Schleck (the overall winner going into today's stage) were in a heated sprint battle less than 3km from the finish line when Schleck dropped his chain.

Many feel that Contador went against tradition when, instead of waiting for the yellow jersey, he took advantage of the lag time and cycled hard to claim the yellow jersey for himself. As for Schleck? He says his "stomach is full of anger" at Contador, and that he will plot his revenge in the next couple of days. The fans don't seem too keen on Contador's untraditional behavior--he was booed as he slipped the yellow jersey on after today's stage.

Although Contador, widely favored to win the TDF overall, has shown a cunning on the course that has not won him any friends. Whether you like him or hate you have to admit that he is helping to make this TDF one of the most heated in recent memory.

How to Increase Visibility in Your Vehicle's Blind Spots

Properly adjusted vehicle mirrors will improve your driving safety because they will help you to see blind spots on either side of your vehicle.

A common crash scenario occurs on a motorist’s passenger side because of the difficulty in observing vehicles or objects due to the distance from the driver’s seat, the need to twist to the right and look back, and to be able to see around high back car seats.

This two minute video clip shows you the proper way to adjust your mirrors so that you can more easily observe vehicles and objects in your blind spots in a way which may be unfamiliar to you. While proper mirror adjustment does not replace turning your head to make a direct visual, it allows you more advance notice of what’s in your blind spots!

There was no chance to race for the yellow, white, or polka dot jerseys, but it was still an exciting stage. Vinokourov, Cavendish, and Petacchi all made spectacular and energetic bids for the finish near the end. Petacchi ended up with the green jersey and Vinokourov won the stage, saying modestly that "for me, just to be at the Tour de France is a victory."

SAN MARCOS: Bicyclist struck by vehicle dies in hospital

Sheriff's investigators are asking for help today to locate the hit-and-run driver that stuck Paul Michael Terpolilli last Saturday morning (July 10th).

Terpolilli was riding his bike south on Twin Oaks Valley Road shortly before 10:30 a.m. when he was apparently stuck by a vehicle. Terpolilli was transported by Paramedics to the Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he died.

Tour de France Stage 11: Recordbreaking Sprints and...Headbutting?

Mark Cavendish took his 13th win today, making him the man who had won the most Tour de France stages of any current sprinter!

Armstrong's Bid For the 2010 Tour Over

In continuing bad luck Armstrong was caught up in 3 crashes, fell off his bike once, and was left behind during the crucial stage 8 ride. Cadel Evans of Team BMC beat Armstrong to the finish line by 13 minutes and 26 seconds, putting any remaining dreams of an 8th TDF win to bed.

Armstrong will, however, be sticking around to assist his teammates, especially 8th place overall Levi Leipheimer, who may still have a chance for yellow.

Many favor Andy Schleck of SaxoBank as a likely winner this year, and he moved into second place overall, 20 seconds behind the Australian Evans who is the current leader.

Hot Weather On Stage 7 Might Make Tomorrow Sticky

First things first: Barredo and Costa have buried the hatchet and put their startling fight behind them.

Secondly, the temperature on this stage of the Tour de France was HOT--over 90 degrees, and Armstrong had been hoping for rain.

If this temperature holds for tomorrow the bicyclists could find themselves stuck to the road and in harm's way. If you'll recall the 2002 TDF, Armstrong narrowly avoided a crash by off roading in his racing bike, and he was the lucky one!

Tomorrow is the day that many expect Contador and Astana to mount an attack, but all bets could be off if the temperature holds. Stay tuned--it is still any man's game out there. Neither Armstrong, Schleck, Contador nor Evans gained or lost time against one another.

Carlos Barredo and Rui Costa Fight At Stage 6 Finish Line

Stage 6 wasn't just a fight for the lead, two riders--Barredo (Quick Step) and Costa (Cassie D'Epargne) got into a physical altercation and had to be pulled apart.

Apparently Costa elbowed Barredo in the side 20 m from the finish line, nearly knocking him off his bike.

Armstrong Plagued With Flat Tire, Falls To 18th Overall

Armstrong, bruised and bloodied from yesterday's spills, had another day of bad luck as an "ill-timed flat tire" left him alone, behind the pack, and "pedaling furiously." By the time this 3rd stage was done, Armstrong had dropped from 5th to 18 place overall, and was 50 seconds behind Contador.

Armstrong, when asked about today's ride, was grim but circumspect:

"We're not going home but it's very frustrating. I'm not going to make any excuses. We came in here today in good position. First there was a crash that split the group, we hung tough, and then got the flat tire right at the wrong moment. It's the nature of the sport. Sometimes you're the hammer, sometimes you're the nail. Today I was the nail."

Armstrong and his team, which include Levi Leipheimer, had hoped to make up critical time on the cobblestones before the hilly stages start, but didn't get the chance.

Armstrong Caught In Tour de France Stage 2 Crash, No Yellow Jersey

Armstrong, after an unlucky day of crashes and slow-downs, remains 5th overall in the 2010 Tour de France. 3:19 off the leader, Sylvian Chavanel, he moved one space down the ranks due to his spill. He wasn't the only one to fall, though. Alberto Contador, the title holder, and Andy and Frank Schleck went down too.

According to Armstrong "It was as if someone had put something on the road, it was so surreal. There was no way to stay on your bike." Armstrong sustained abrasion on his hip and elbow, but at least he didn't break his collar bone or crack a rib.

Science Meets Cycling: How Giro Built Lance Armstrong's $15,000 Custom Helmet

Lance Armstrong's 2010 Tour de France is arguably the most important race of his career--and Giro wanted to be a part of it.

They knew their aerodynamic helmet didn't fit Armstrong well, so decided to custom-build him the perfect helmet for the TDF time-trial instead.

Getting help from an LA special effects team, Giro built a perfect model of Armstrong in his riding position, which allowed them to test the 100+ iterations of the custom helmet without Armstrong being there. Hopeful their new fit will perform better in a crowd and during the time trial, Giro hopes to see their R&D pay off.

Proposed Law Cracks Down On Cell Phone Use While Bicycling

Due to a proposed new law, bicyclists may want to lay off the cellphone while riding. The California Assembly's Transportation Committee approved legislation that will ban bicyclists from using their cell phones at all while in motion.

We've seen the damage a distracted driver on a cell phone can do, so it makes sense that drivers of the OTHER vehicle on the road would be held to the same standards.

Michael Ball and Rock Racing Team Named in Sealed Warrant

Michael Ball, a California fashion designer (of the now-defunct Rock and Republic) and owner of the renown Rock Racing bicycling team, has been named in a sealed warrant pertaining to the FDA investigation of Floyd Land.

Rock Racing Team, which had tried--and failed--to sign Landis to the roster two years ago, recently lost its professional status. Landis served as an unofficial adviser to the team in 2008, and once rode as a guest of the team in the Tour of California.

Given Landis' doping confessions, the timing of the investigation into the team is unavoidable. You can check out all the details of the inquiry at the New York Daily News.

Russ Jones, Triathlete Extraordinaire & TCSD Member to speak on Sunday 6/20

I'm really excited to announce that TCSD member and Triathlete Extroaordinaire Russ Jones is going to speak to us on Sunday June 20th at the Cafe Elysa (3076 Carlsbad Blvd.) in Carlsbad at 9:00 a.m.

He will be speaking about Time Specific Training on the bike and the run. His mantra is "Less is More".

Russ is a USAT #1 ranked age group triathlete in the 50-54 group. He's won over 100 triathlons in his 30 year career and was also a National age group champ as well. His marathon time of 2:18 also qualified for him in the past for the Olympic trials.

I have known Russ for about 20 years. He'll soon be retiring as a mailman and will offer his experience as a coach. He once had a flattering triathlon article written about him titled the "The Mailman delivers... even on Sundays." His longevity & success in the sport of triathlon is hard to match. I kid him that he's like Cal Ripken, the Baltimore Orioles longevity king.

LAPD Involvement In Critical Mass "Incident" Leads To Claim, Suspension

This video was taken by Manuel Gallegos, 32, who was recording police officers at a Hollywood Critical Mass.

The video clearly shows a police officer at the event first causing a bicyclist to fall, and second getting into an altercation with Gallegos. Gallegos is alleging assault, battery, false arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and is a precursor to a lawsuit.

Apparently after the incident the LAPD launched an internal probe --and recently suspended 4 officers over the contents of the video. This would seem to contrast their initial statement that the "use of force" captured on the video was in the service of detaining traffic violators.

RAAM Is Upon Us: Cue The Hallucinations

The 3,000 mile trans-continental bike race known as the Race Across America (RAAM) kicked off on the first Tuesday of the month.

A little history of the event: It was started in 1982 and was first known as the Great American Bike Race. Participants began at the Santa Monica Pier and ended at the Empire State building in NYC. But as of late, participants begin the ride in Oceanside, CA and finish in Annapolis, MD.

Both solo competitors and relay teams participate in RAAM, although they're broken up into categories. This year, the race has had 30 solo entrants (including 4 women!) and 39 teams, although who knows how many will finish the race. Because it is one of the most psychologically and physically grueling events around, drop-outs are par for the course.

California Assembly Bill 1951 Dies In Committee

California Assembly Bill 1951, an attempt to deter dangerous driving, has languished in committee after the California District Attorneys Association (CDAA) voiced its opposition. While disappointing, there are few policy makers or law enforcement officials who are willing to fully acknowledge the danger of cars.

Quebec Triathletes Killed By Pickup Truck

On Friday, May 14, 2010, 6 bicyclists were struck from behind by a pickup truck at 10 AM. Three of the cyclists on Highway 112 east of Montreal were fatally injured, and the other three were hospitalized. The accident scene was littered with bike frames, wrist-watches, shoes, and water bottles, and one of the survivors called the accident a particularly gruesome "bowling match."

Unlike the majority of bicyclist-vehicle fatalities, alcohol was NOT a factor in the accident. The driver, a volunteer firefighter in his 20s, gave first aid to the bicyclists after the accident. And weather wasn't a factor either--so police are investigating mechanical problems, speed, and distraction as possible causes for this tragedy. As of today nobody knows if the driver will face criminal charges.

The surviving bicyclists are speaking out against the lack of a paved shoulder--some think this simple road improvement would have been able to save the lives of the three bicyclists on a very dangerous road.

Although these 6 bicyclists trained regularly together and were experienced, they were on a dangerous portion of road that didn't have a bike lane. If you must ride without a bike lane do everything you can to remain visible and safe!

Floyd Landis Used Performance-Enhancing Drugs

Now the next question is, did Lance Armstrong?

Landis has been fighting to clear his name since he tested positive for synthetic testosterone at the 2006 TDF. Finally coming "clean" in an interview with the press, Landis detailed his extensive, consistent use of HGH, EOP, testosterone and more for the majority of his career.

Determined, it seems, to bring the rest of the dopers down with him, he sent emails to bicycling and anti-doping officials implicating many other well-respected athletes--including Armstrong--as well as team managers and international governing bodies.

Armstrong, who recently crashed in the Tour de California, seems to have bigger things to worry about, namely getting into top shape for the upcoming Tour de France.

Mayor Kicks Off Enormous Streets Repaving Project

In an e-mail from Mayor Jerry Sanders the city will be undertaking a huge city wide repaving project. A reprint of his e-mail is below. This is great news for Bicyclist!

City Will Spend Nearly $47 Million to Repave 134 Miles of City Streets

Today I announced the start of what might be the largest street repaving project in this city’s history. We will be giving a complete makeover to 134 miles of city streets. More than one thousand city blocks will benefit from this work. With this project, we’re doing as many miles of asphalt overlay as we have in the previous eight fiscal years combined.

Some of these streets are in such poor condition they’ve become downright notorious. A Mira Mesa resident recently suggested that the only vehicle sturdy enough to handle Mira Mesa Boulevard would be a tank. The list goes on and on of other streets in dire need of repaving – Nobel Drive, Morena Boulevard, Carmel Mountain Road.

We announced the project today in Clairemont on Mount Etna Drive, a street that has been a constant source of aggravation for the neighborhood. One resident used the term “teeth-rattling” to describe what it was like to drive this street.

For those who don’t remember how we arrived at this moment, here’s a quick overview. Shortly after I was elected, I recognized that the city’s streets and other infrastructure had deteriorated to unacceptable levels.

Not only was it embarrassing, but public safety was at risk. And putting off the work would simply mean spending far more money in the long run. So I worked with the City Council on $103 million bond so we could fix streets, sidewalks, buildings and our storm-drain infrastructure.

Support CBC's bill to increase penalties for careless driving

The California Bicycle Coalition is a non-profit education and lobbying organization working to improve bicycling conditions throughout the State of California. CBC's mission is to create safe, healthy and livable communities in California by promoting bicycling for transportation and recreation.

URGENT ACTION NEEDED

Support CBC's bill to increase penalties for careless driving. On Monday, Apr. 19, the Assembly Transportation Committee will hear Assembly Bill 1951, authored by San Francisco Assemblymember Tom Ammiano and sponsored by CBC. The bill proposes tougher penalties for careless drivers who injure others.

This bill faces an uphill battle, so we need as show legislators there's solid support among the advocacy community. The California District Attorneys Association has vowed to fight our efforts to criminalize rule-of-the-road violations that injure motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Please send a letter of support for AB 1951 to the Assembly Transportation Committee chair by Monday, Apr. 12. Letters received by Monday will be compiled by committee staff in preparation for the Apr. 19 hearing at the State Capitol.

BACKGROUND

Various sections of the California Vehicle Code define driving offenses and specify penalties. Section 21070 defines a violation of Vehicle Code Division 11 provisions (basic rules of the road) as an infraction.

Sec. 42001.19 imposes a base fine of $70 for a violation of Sec. 21070 that results in an injury; a violation causing great bodily injury is punishable with a base fine of $95.

AB 1951 amends Sec. 21070 to specify that a violation of Div. 11 that results in an injury is a misdemeanor. The bill amends Sec. 42001.19 to specify that a violation of Sec. 21070 that causes an injury is punishable by a base fine of $145 and from 5 to 90 days in jail.

Penalties for all injury-causing driving offenses must be comparable and must reflect the seriousness of the consequences for victims. The fines currently specified for injury-causing violations of Sec. 21070 are less than half the amount of fines for other kinds of injury-causing driving offenses, even though all use similar definitions of "injury" -- Sec. 21070 fines are even lower than those for some non-injury misdemeanor driving offenses. Unlike all other injury-causing driving offenses (including some non-injury offenses), fines for Sec. 21070 violations are not punishable with a jail or prison sentence.

Criminal penalties for careless driving will help protect all road users, especially those most vulnerable in a collision with a motor vehicle, including bicyclists, pedestrians, runners, skateboarders, road construction workers and farm equipment operators. According to data published in the Alliance fo Biking and Walking's 2010 Benchmarking Report, bicyclists and pedestrians in California are disproportionately at risk in vehiclecollisions, accounting for 20% of all vehicle collision fatalities.

Deterring careless drivers will help hold down costs borne by health insurers, employers and taxpayers. The San Francisco Injury Center for Research and Prevention at UCSF tracked the treatment of pedestrians hit by cars within San Francisco and added up their costs. From 2004-2008 that cost was almost $75 million, an average of more than $20,000 per injured pedestrian over those five years. In 2004, 76% of the total costs were publicly funded (e.g., Medicare, MediCal and other public funding sources).

Every day bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists are injured by careless drivers. A driver found at fault for injuring someone while speeding or driving recklessly faces criminal penalties. But if the same driver injures someone while making an illegal right turn, failing to yield the right-of-way or ignoring another basic rule of the road, he or she faces no more than a traffic citation. Same driver, same street, same victim, same injuries - but far different penalties. All drivers who injure others must be held to the same standard of responsibility.

By making the penalties for unsafe driving comparable to those for other injury-causing driving offenses, AB 1951 offers a strong and appropriate deterrent to those drivers who fail to obey the rules of the road. I strongly urge the Assembly Transportation Committee to approve this bill.

CBC Amended Bill To Protect Bicyclists and Pedestrians

This bill, authored by San Francisco Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, is the centerpiece of CBC's 2010 legislative plans. AB 1591will set the minimum fine at $145 from $70 - $95, and would put jail time on the table for drivers who cause injury.

CBC hopes to add traffic school and community service as penalties so that careless drivers can be rehabilitated instead of merely punished.

Jordan Rapp Injured While Bicycling

Professional triathlete Jordan Rapp was riding his bicycle when he was hit by a car on Tuesday, March 23. Officers involved in the investigation say that it was likely a commuting farm worker turned left into oncoming traffic--and in front of Rapp--at the intersection of Lewis and Old Lewis road in Oxnard, California.

Rapp is said to have lost 2-3 units of blood and suffered numerous broken bones, contusions, and lacerations from the accident. He remains sedated, on a ventilator, and in the ICU according to his wife Jill Sevege.

As of right now the motorist hasn't been found. The vehicle involved in the accident will probably have a broken driver's side window, and potential body damage to the left side.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck On Bicyclist's Side

It looks like bicycling advocates and bicyclists everywhere have finally gotten their wish: LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has vowed to do a better job protecting the "most vulnerable commuters" on the road.

The promised course of action potentially includes new training for LAPD officers as well as a document specifically outlining an officer's responsibility to bicyclists.

The conflict between drivers and bicyclists springs eternal, but the case of "The Road Rage Doctor" has galvanized much of the bicycling community.

LA Cyclist Relieved As "Road Rage Doctor" Jailed

The so-called "Road Rage Doctor" was convicted of mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, battery with serious injury, and reckless driving causing injury. He's been sentenced to five years and prison, and Ron Peterson, one of the injured bicyclists in the case, was understandably relieved.

Armstrong's 2010 Tour Down Under A Success

Last year, Armstrong used the long, hot Tour Down Under as the "proving ground" for a credible Tour de France bit, and this year he's done the same thing. Armstrong, joined by his Radioshack team, didn't expect to win this year's Tour Down Under, but generated excitement about his "comeback" when he placed 20th overall, just 49 seconds behind Allan Davis.

When asked about his performance, Armstrong said that it "has given [him] the reassurance that [he] can still race at the highest level." Which is great news for fans of Armstrong...or at least fans of the excitement he generates.

Although the event suits sprinters like winner Greipel (Germany) and Davis (Australia), Armstrong's plans to test his mettle against some of the best have paid off...so far.

2010 Shadow Tour Stagecoach Century

Following a GREAT DAY of riding, is my summary of the 2010 Shadow Tour STAGECOACH CENTURY in Ocotillo, California.

The weather cooperated, as I crawled out of my VW van early. It was temperate and there was not much wind. There were over 690 registered riders. TTTs and riders of all ages and styles. The course was 50 miles out and back, but it didn’t feel like it because of the vast changing desert scenery and climbing. My mind wandered. According to a friend's Garmin the overall elevation gain was 4,562 feet, although the highest course point was around 2,500 feet. Essentially it was a long, slow, steady climb to mile marker 50, with a few tough hills, then a few fast drops. This wonderful event takes place in the Anza Borrego desert on the back side of Mount Laguna along the old Stagecoach Wagon trail, which was nicely pointed out by the race director, Jim Knight. I heard the fastest rider did it in 4:45 or so, the Dude was flying on the way back.

There were a few strategically placed aide stations and of course the lunch stop at about mile 45. That can of leaded coke a cola never tasted so good.

I spotted many TCSD (Triathlon Club of San Diego) racers, there was even a brief sighting of the Commander *smile* on the course, almost like the green flash at sunset.

Shortly thereafter, we stopped at mile 45 and asked about the lunch menu, as we had 55 glorious miles to go. To my delight, there was hot chicken soup, subway type sandwiches, cokes, Fritos, aide station goodies galore (and more) passed out by the friendly desert locals. (There was no Julian apple pie with a dollop of whipped cream for dessert, but the rest was tasty!)

On the way back, I saw the SDBC's (San Diego Bicycle Club's) Elite team of about 25 riders - pushing hard in a pack...I know they had a training camp going on. They looked polished, lean & fast!

Luckily, at about mile 65 I was able to jump on to a different medium paced team pack of 25 riders (also training) and thankfully got sucked along for some time in the draft. What a difference! We then all descended on a curved and winding road together at about 40 miles per hour in one spot. It felt a little dicey, as there are cliffs. Then it was back to reality (riding w/o the pack) when we hit a steep switch back climb later on. The pack sure was fun while it lasted!

In all, the ride reminded me of a typical day touring the Baja 1000, which I did twice ie... not many cars, pretty scenery, but challenging. I estimate I burned 6,400 calories, so food and water intake were monitored. This would be an ideal training ride for Ironman competition or early season base building. I heartily recommend this ride. The race organizer Jim Knight and all the volunteers were so organized and just super!

The best thing of all was seeing and talking to friends (and strangers) out there, camping in the desert, with the wonderful smells, stars, peace and quiet.

I'm tired today, but in a good way. Next weekend, the Carlsbad half!

"Road Rage Doctor" facing more than Prison......

Dear Fellow Athletes:

In my experience, the jury's verdict & courts sentence of 5 years and more will help protect society for years to come. Ironically, Dr Thompson may be forced to ride a bicycle to get around. Here's why and a few legal articles I wrote that will help you out if you fall victim of road rage:

Besides the five years for road rage (minus legal good time credits), the doctor will forever lose his California drivers license after he gets out of jail. The DMV will computerize the action, so even if the Doctor moves out of state, the reciprocity will track him. Pursuant to the Vehicle Code, since he used his vehicle to assault another and was convicted, the DMV will forever revoke his license. Should he get caught driving while on parole, he may be sent back to Prison. He can also be independently punished for any new violations of driving on a revoked License, after he's off parole. Moreover, the DMV may independently review his driving license privilege and take it for causing the injury. See my article on DMV Justice here.

You all know that he will likely face a civil judgment or settlement if his car Insurance company doesn't squirm out of their indemnification obligations due to a coverage issue, as this could to be argued to be a non covered intentional act by Thompson. But, not so fast, as the real teeth to collecting money for the victims can be had in the criminal restitution order that was likely part of the courts sentencing judgment. In other words, he will be required by the criminal court to pay the victim, or face the further consequences of incarceration, unlike a civil case judgment. Moreover, he can't Bankrupt the debt either due the nature of the convictions. See my article on Bicyclists Rights in Court here.

Thompson's stuck, because even if he keeps his medical license (since this didn't happen while on the job as a physician) he used poor judgment. It's been reported that his medical license was already suspended last month, a permanent revocation is likely. That will ultimately be decided by the State's medical licensing board.

I have successfully settled or tried many road rage/bicycle injury cases for bicyclists in front of a jury and currently have a Road Rage case that I'm prosecuting. I have even collected restitution in the criminal court on behalf of victims of crime, and in one case we made the road rager look the bicyclist in the eye in court and apologize before we settled. I've also had people taken off the road due to a DMV action my client has initiated. See here.

Mandaville Canyon "Road Rage" Doctor Sentenced to Five Years

Just minutes ago Dr. Christopher Thomas Thompson, the Brentwood doctor that was convicted of critically injuring two bicyclests in July of last year was sentenced to five years in prison.

According to the Los Angeles Times, LA County Superior Court Judge Scott T. Millington called the case a "wake-up call" to motorists and cyclists and urged local government to provide riders with more bike lanes. He further stated that he believed that Thompson had shown a lack of remorse during the case and that the victims were particularly vulnerable while riding their bicycles.

Missy Giove Pleads Guilty To Drug Charges

Melissa "Missy" Giove, women's mountain biking titlist, is no stranger to controversy. Know not only for her skills on the trail, she has always been outspoken about her lesbian lifestyle and was famous for wearing a dead piranha around her neck.

Now she's in the spotlight for a different reason...trafficking marijuana. She plead guilty in response to one count of conspiracy to posessing drugs with the intent to distribute in Albany.

Hit-And-Run Suspect Pleads "Not Guilty"

A man suspected in the death of a Martinez bicyclist in November of 2008 pleaded "not guilty" to charges of hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. 50 of the bicyclists relatives and friends were at the brief proceeding.

The victim, Mark Pendleton, was a member of the Contra Costa Cycling Club, and also competed on the Wells Fargo racing team. He was on a routine bicycle ride on the evening of November 24, 2008 when a SUV or truck crossed over the lanes and struck him. The vehicle left behind shards of headlight even though the driver fled the scene.

Denise Pendleton, the 49 year old widow of the victim, said she was "very grateful" for the progress in the case, as it had seemed bleak for quite some time.

The People v. Andrew Woolley

Andrew Wooley, a San Diego bicyclist, had a run-in with a motorcycle cop on El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego last march. He split a traffic lane with his bicycle to pass slower cars and was pulled over by motorcycle David Root for violating CVC 21202(a), the Far To The Right rule.

When Woolley tried to correct Root on the wording of CVC 21202(a) he was awarded with a ticket from Root. Wooley argued the ticket in court, but the Judge upheld the ticket. You can peruse the respondants brief below, wherein they agreed with Wooley on appeal - which should result in a reversal of the conviction.

INTRODUCTION

Appellant was observed riding a bicycle to the left of slow-moving traffic, rather than along the right edge of the roadway. A police officer cited Appellant for a violation of Vehicle Code section 2l202(a), which requires a person operating a bicycle "at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at that time" to ride along the right edge of the roadway. Appellant was convicted of the violation. Appellant now argues there was insufficient evidence of his guilt for several reasons. Respondent agrees with the contention of Appellant that because he was not operating his bicycle "at a speed less than ... the traffic at that time" the statute does not apply to him. Accordingly, Respondent concedes the conviction should be reversed.

STATEMENT OF THE CASE

On March 6, 2009, Appellant was cited for violating Vehicle Code section 21202(a), failure to ride along the right edge of the road. Appellant was arraigned and pleaded not guilty. Trial was set for August 6, 2009. The trial was held and Appellant was found guilty of violating Vehicle Code section 2l202(a) and filled $165. Appellant now appeals his conviction.

STATEMENT OF FACTS

Respondent adopts and incorporates herein by reference the Statement of the Case as set forth in the Clerk's Transcript [CT] and the Transcript of Proceedings [TP]. The following relevant facts are extracted from the CT and TP.

Trial:

Testimony of Officer Green:

Officer Root has been a San Diego Police Officer for approximately 22 years. On March 6, 2009, the officer was on duty on a police motorcycle in the 4300 block of El Cajon Boulevard. (TP at 2.) The officer was in the number one lane. Traffic was very heavy and was creeping in little stages. As the officer was creeping along, Appellant pedaled by on a bicycle, riding between the number one and two lanes. The officer saw one car either change lanes or veer over, and Appellant had to brake sharply. (TP at 3.) The posted speed limit in that section of the road is 35 miles per hour. (TP at 7.) The officer pursued Appellant and cited him for failing to ride along the right edge of the road pursuant to Vehicle Code section 21202.

Testimony of Appellant:

Appellant testified he was riding his bicycle in the number two lane; to the left of cars that were backed up. (TP at 7.) At one point near the intersection Appellant moved to the middle of the lane and had to brake hard when a car stopped suddenly. (TP at 10.)

Appellant made several arguments regarding the application of the statute to his bicycle riding. (TP at 7-14.)

Ruling:

Appellant was found guilty and filled $165.

ARGUMENT

THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO

ESTABLISH APPELLANT'S GUILT

The evidence at trial established that at the time of the citation traffic was moving very slowly, creeping along, and that Appellant was riding to the left ofthe traffic in the number two lane, passing the slow-moving cars. The officer cited Appellant for failing to ride along the right edge of the roadway in violation of Vehicle Code section 21202(a). However, that section applies only to a person operating a bicycle "at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at that time" (emphasis added). At the time of the citation, traffic was creeping along and Appellant was riding at a speed greater than the speed of traffic at that time.

Appellant may have violated other statutes (e.g., Vehicle Code section 22350), but does not appear to have violated Section 21202(a). Accordingly, Respondent concedes the conviction should be reversed.

CONCLUSION

Based on the foregoing, the judgment below should be reversed.

Recall: Zefal CO2 Bicycle Tire Inflators

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Todson Inc. is recalling about 24,000 of its carbon dioxide bicycle tire inflators because the pressurized cartridge containing carbon dioxide (CO2) can forcefully separate from the pump head, posing a risk of injury to the consumer.

This recall involves Zefal CO2 bicycle tire inflators with a small pressurized carbon dioxide cartridge. The metal cartridge is threaded into the inflator head, which allows for the controlled release of carbon dioxide into the bicycle inner tube. The recalled inflators have “Zefal EZ+ CO2 inflator” printed on the front of the package. Model number 5602 and UPC number 798661556020 is printed on the back.

Return/refund information below…

The inflators were sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide from August 2009 through November 2009 for about $15.

Consumers should immediately stop using the inflators and return them to Walmart for a full refund.

Will Armstrong Dominate Come TDF 2010?

YES...well, at least if Armstrong himself has anything to say about it. The Los Angeles Times caught up with Armstrong and his Team RadioShack as they trained in Tucson to discuss future plans.

Although Armstrong freely admits that Contador is "clearly" the strongest bicyclist in the world, he has a new lease on life, and a new Team (team RadioShack) for the Tour de France in 2010. A smart businessman and avid sports fan, Armstrong doesn't shy away from rumors of the building rivalry between himself and former teammate and TDF champion Contador. "Come game day," Armstrong says, "you need a bit of that build-up." And, with Contador going on record to say things like he has "never had admiration for [Armstrong]...and never will" it could get pretty tense.

Team RadioShack, composed of 8 out of 9 Atsana riders from last year's tour (Contador being the notable exception), has already started training in full force. Although Armstrong is no longer on top of the bicycling world, he hasn't fallen far; and with a team full of people like Bruyneel, Leipheimer, Horner, Kloden, Yaroslav Popovych, Jose Luis Rubiera, Tomas Vaitkus, Gregory Rast and Sergio Paulinho, it would be silly to count 'em out.

Bicyclist Killed In (Totally Preventable) Trolley Crash

This Tuesday a bicyclist was killed in a crash with a San Diego trolley car on Imperial Ave. in the Mountain View area.

Police report that the collision took place at about 5:20 PM when the male bicyclist ignored the railroad crossing arms and rode around them, straight into an incoming Eastbound trolley. You can see the San Diego Times article here.

What in the world was this man thinking?! His mistake in judgement resulted in a tragedy that not only prematurely ended his life, but one that has changed the lives of his friends and family and the passengers on that Eastbound trolley.

While all of us can identify with the frustration of waiting for the railroad crossing arms to ascend, we all know they are there to keep us safe from the crossing trains and trolleys!

As bicyclists it is easy to think we're above the rules. After all, bicycles are so much more agile than cars, and we've honed our powers of perception from constant vigilance and defensive riding. But, the security you feel in your saddle is sometimes false. As this incidence illustrates, nobody is above the rules.

So go ahead, go for a Thanksgiving ride, but please: if you hear the ding-ding-dinging of railroad arms descending, STOP YOUR BIKE, take a deep breath, and count your many blessings.

Escondido Driver Swerves Into Bike Lane Then Flees Accident Scene

On Wednesday, November 18th, at about 8:30am, two teen-aged bicyclists were injured when a driver swerved into their lane. The boys, aged 14 and 13, were riding single-file in the Bear Valley Parkway bike lane, when an SUV swerved in front of them. The front rider managed to avoid the car when he swerved right and hit the curb, but the second boy ran into the first rider and was thrown from his bike.

At first the driver seemed cooperative, and stopped to see if the boys were OK. However, when they requested help the driver left.

Between the two of them, the boys were treated for cuts, bruises, and a potentially broken nose at the Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.

The woman, who hasn't yet been found, was described to police as a petite Latino woman with shoulder length hair in a ponytail, a Spanish accident, and acne scars. She drives a tan SUV and was last seen driving north on Royal Crest Drive.

Woman Run Over By Garbage Truck While In Bike Lane

Elderly Westbeth NYC actress Shami Chaikin, 78, was riding her motorized scooter in a (supposedly) protected bicycle lane last Thursday morning when she was partially run over by a garbage truck. While she was initially listed in critical condition at St. Vincent's Hospital, but there seems to be hope that she'll pull through.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in fully cooperation with Easton Sports, has recalled bicycles with EA30 Stems. The stem can apparently crack mid-ride, causing the rider to loose control.

Bicycling Under The Influence Will Cost You A Pretty Penny In Sacremento

Well, 57,000 pretty pennies to be exact. Just because you're on a bicycle doesn't mean that you are safe from arrest. In a recent DUI operation in Sacramento County 7 of the 57 arrested were bicycle riders. And the penalty for bicycling intoxicated can be as high as $570.

Bicyclist Collides With Police Cruiser Resulting In Fatality

In San Diego a 63 year old man was killed when his bike collided with a police car on University City street. On what was, presumably, his morning commute, Walter Freeman rode his bicycle out of a gas station at around 7:30 am, crossed the road and continued directly into the path of a police cruiser traveling southbound.

The bicyclist died at the scene of the accident.

The police cruiser in question was traveling below the posted speed limit, and was en route to a non-urgent accident.

Armstrong Auctions Bikes For Charity

Lance Armstrong auctioned off seven of his Trek bikes at Southeby's on the first day of November, one for each of his Tour de France wins. Six out of the seven bikes had been turned into works of art by Damien Hirst. Proceeds from the auction did, of course, go to benefit his LIFESTRONG Foundation.

One of the bikes has a more colorful past than the others, though: it was the bike stolen and then recovered during this year's Tour of California. The bike, stolen by Lee Monroe Crider, was sold to Dung Hoang Le for $200. Le returned it to the police who then returned it to Armstrong.

Armstrong wrote a short essay to potential buyers in the closed auction:

"I'm not a gearhead, and my garage is anything but a cycling museum, but I can honestly say that letting go of my bikes has never been harder," Armstrong explains. "From Damien Hirst's masterpiece Tour de France 'finale' Trek Madone covered in real butterflies, to the KAWS 'Chompers' cycle that I broke my collarbone on in the Vuelta Castilla y Leon, every ride is a treasured piece of personal history that I'm proud to offer up to benefit LIVESTRONG."

There is a new women's bicycling magazine on the scene: shePedals: the Journal of Women in Cycling. The debut issue is packed with editorials, reviews, interviews, and more. And guess what? The readers like it. ("...a really wonderful women's cycling journal", "It's great!!!", "Love it!)

A website for the magazine is in the works, and ShePedals has also formed a USA Cycling club for racers and non-racers alike. The club will support a variety of women-centered non profits as well as holding educational events around the country.

"Road Rage Doctor" Convicted

It's reported that Christopher Thomas Thompson, a former emergency room doctor, was found guilty of six felonies and one misdemeanor and was taken into jail on Monday.

Thompson was accused of assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving causing specified bodily injury, battery with serious bodily injury and mayhem. The most serious charges stem from a July 4, 2008, incident on Mandeville Canyon Road, the road where Thompson lives, where he was accused of abruptly stopping his car in front of two cyclists. Other charges relate to a similar incident on the same road that did not result in injuries.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Mary Stone, who prosecuted the case, asked for Thompson to be jailed immediately, calling him a flight risk and a safety threat to cyclists. "There's not a cyclist in Los Angeles who would feel comfortable with this defendant out on the road after this verdict," Stone told the court.

Outside court, the cyclists in the case said they were relieved at the outcome.

"Our hope is that this brings to light how vulnerable cyclists are out there," Peterson, 41, told reporters. His face was permanently scarred from the crash and he underwent reconstructive surgery on his nose, which he said remains numb.

Stoehr, 30, said the crash left him unable to work for months and that he rarely rides his bike anymore. Nevertheless, Stoehr said he felt some sympathy for Thompson as he watched the physician being led away in handcuffs.

"It's sad for both sides," Stoehr said. "I lost a lot of my time and my life, and he's losing a lot of his."

Road Rage Doctor Case Takes Turn For Bizarre

In the latest news from the courtroom, the Road Rage Doctor's case has taken a turn for the bizarre. During his testimony he contradicts his own 911 call, touts his history as a "life saving" doctor, and discussed his habit of video-taping cyclists who broke the law while he drove alongside them.

According to his attorney one of the bicyclists just fell over on his own, the good Doctor didn't slam on his breaks, and this is all just a big misunderstanding. Really!

I know that I seem biased in my coverage of this case, and it is because I am. As a bicyclist this guy is my worst nightmare. He's cocky, dismissive, and dangerous. Not to mention potentially dishonest. We've all ridden less then defensively, and some of us might have even gotten a little cocky on our bikes. But this story, and the unfolding trial, should serve as constant reminders to us all: RIDE SAFE.

2010 Amgen Tour of California Route Unveiled

Well California bicycling fans, the 2010 Amgen Tour of California route has been decided!

The tour will be held from May 16-23 and will compete for the first time with the Giro d'Italia and will feature some of our all time favorites such as seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, Radio Shack teammate and three-time winner Levi Leipheimer, national road champion George Hincapie (BMC) and national time trial champion Dave Zabriskie (Garmin-Slipstream).

The tour will begin in Nevada City and generally head south, stopping in Sacramento, Davis, Santa Rosa, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Jose, Modesto, Visalia, Bakersfield, Pasadena, Big Bear, Los Angeles and Thousand Oaks. Sadly there will be no stage in San Diego. There will however be Sierra Nevada climbs, a Big Bear finish and a Los Angeles TT.

Bicyclists and Traffic Laws...are they compatible?

Thus begins this interesting article by Christopher Beam a political reporter with Slate.com in Washington D.C. He takes a close look at both sides of the argument between today's cycling activists: "vehicularists" & "facilitators".

It's a great read and worthy of note considering the "Road Rage Doctor" trial going on in Brentwood California as of this posting.

Defense Attorney Cross-Examines Bicyclists In "Dr. Road Rage" Trial

Putting a new spin on the road-rage case, the defense alleged that the two injured bicyclists in the case were looking for a fight before the incident occured.

Remember, if you're a bicyclist and you run into somebody with road rage, as tempting as it is, don't loose your temper. Because you don't have a ton of steel, plastic, and air bags around you, you're the more vulnerable party. Ride defensively and don't respond to inflamatory behavior. Your pride might get hurt, but your body won't!!

Distracted Driving is DEADLY

Distracted driving is dangerous, we all know that. But do you know HOW dangerous? Statistics say that our response times are seriously compromised when we talk or text on our cell phones while driving. In fact, a driver who texts is 23 times more likely to get into a crash than an undistracted driver.

And texting while you drive is WORSE than driving drunk. That's right...WORSE.

Armstrong Meets With Colorado Governor on Bike Racing

Although Lance Armstrong is a well known Austinite, his residence in Aspen, Colorado is considerably less public. Aspen, at about 7,900 ft. is perfect for training and relaxing.

This year, Lance participated in the mountain bike race known as the Leadville Trail 100, and is now meeting with Governor Bill Ritter to discuss the possibility of bringing back the Coors Classic and other bike races for Colorado. The two discussed fundraising and time lines, making sure to keep the focus practical.

Tour of California Returns to Santa Rosa

Although budgetary woes cast shadows of doubt about the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, city and business leaders in Santa Rosa have confirmed that the event will return for its 5th year.

The road race, an 8-day crowd pleaser, helped put Santa Rosa on the cycling map, and usually draws more than 10,000 people to the downtown area.

Those interviewed were thrilled to see the event return--not only is it an economic boost in touch times, but it fosters a unique sense of community.

"Road Rage Doctor" Trial Begins

We've all heard the story: Thompson, a veteran ER doctor, allegedly stomped on his breaks in front of two bicyclists to "teach them a lesson" (initial post here), seriously injuring them in the process.

Well, his day in court has come; the so-called "Road Rage Doctor's" trial has begun.

Highlights from the trial include the Prosecutor's opening, in which he played recording of the 911 call from the day of the accident. Thompson's own words: "they'll [the cyclists] tell you they are seriously injured, but they are not," seemed to play against him as both bicyclists were seriously injured and are still recovering.

The prosecuting attorney also cited a couple of road-rage incidents involving a car that matched the description and license plate number of Thompson's car.

Thompson's defense attorney countered with the idea that the event was "an unfortunate accident and not the result of intentional action" citing Thompson's 30 year career as a doctor saving lives.

Bicyclist Seriously Injured in Palisade, NY This Weekend

This Sunday, on Route 9W, a 46 year old female bicyclist was seriously injured when she crashed just before the Oak Tree Road intersection. She is currently listed in serious condition at the Nyack Hospital in Nyack, NY, and the extent and cause of her injuries are unknown.

Investigators are scouting the area for both the cause of the accident and any witnesses who may have helpful information. Whether this was a hit-and-run, a terrain issue, or something else entirely, a bicycle accident of this magnitude is hard to ignore.

Another Armstrong Leaves Cycling?

Another Armstrong in cycling? Although the post title probably made it clear, this time we're not talking about Lance, we're talking about Kristin Armstrong. Kristen, no relation to Lance Armstrong's ex-wife of the same name, has quietly achieved the top honors cycling has to give and will be retiring. Maybe.

Armstrong, who is 36, was a late bloomer who came to cycling because of the damage running was causing her body. She won a gold medal in the Beijing Olympics last year, and just won the time trial at the world championship of cycling.

With those accolades tucked firmly under her belt she retired after a final world championship road race. But...much like her more famous namesake, Lance, she is cagey about the permanence of her retirement and hints at a possible 2012 Olympic come-back.

Maybe it's the name...and maybe it isn't, but either way: watch out for Kristen Armstrong. If she hasn't permanently retired she could be the biggest name in female cycling in years.

Stimulus Money For Bike Route

The American Recovery and Reinvestment act may help Butte County construct one of the largest bike route projects it has ever seen. The so called "Highway 99 Corridor Bikeway Project" would link up nearly seven miles of existing bike paths, and has been trying to get funding for several years.

In addition to the construction project providing jobs, it will encourage people in the community to ride their bikes to school and work. More exercise, economic stimulation, what more could you ask for?!

The Tri-Expo coming to San Diego January 2010

Triathlon fans, mark you calendars for January 29-30, 2010 as the first ever TRI EXPO is coming to San Diego. It will be the "biggest and best triathlon consumer show in San Diego".

San Diego Velodrome 2009 Fall Swap Meet

Fall is in the air, and it's almost time for the one and only San Diego Velodrome Swap Meet! This year it's on Sunday, November 8th so mark your calendars.
